Rhythmical activity is generated by the pacemaker system in the absence of strong activating impulses from the reticular formation. - b. Activating impulses from the reticular formation to the cortex and the thalamus abolish rhythmical cortical activity. - c. Lesions destroying or inactivating the reticular formation or its rostral connections result in the appearance of rhythmical slow waves, presumably caused by release of synchronizing centers from a tonic desynchronizing input by the reticular formation.
